Skype mostly worked out of the box for my Ubuntu 10.10 on my Asus 1005ha. Sound and video worked well, but the only thing that wouldn't work was the microphone.
I clicked on my speaker in the title bar, and ensured that the mute button was unchecked, like so:
I then tried messing with the Alsa Mixer (click Alt-F2, then type gnome-alsamixer). That looked like this:
Still, that didn't work. So I installed pavucontrol (sudo apt-get install pavucontrol) and ran it. Here, the microphone had right and left channels, and the mic on the asus is mono. So, I slid the right mic to zero, like so:
And that fixed it! Now skype works with the mic as well as video. And, it even has the ability to share your desktop screen live with another skype user, so you can do some interactive geeking. Sweet!
