I have a busted XBOX headset (that the dog chewed up so there is no foam)
I have a ski helmet.
I have a FRS radio. Here is how to combine all of them....
When I took apart the XBOX headset, I noticed that the Blue and Black wires were wired to the speaker, and the white and ground (no rubber) were wired to the microphone, and this was all wrapped up in a 2.5mm jack. I tested this set up with a FRS radio that had a 2.5mm jack, and the microphone worked, but the speaker didn't. Not sure why it didn't work, but I figured I could make it work, so I snipped all the connections.
I wanted to put a new plug on the headset so that I could use it for a radio as well as an iPod to have the option to listen to either music, or plug it into a set of FRS radios I have with a 3.5mm jack. I had a spare phone headset that was also broken, so I cut the headset off of this, and I was in business. This had red, black, and ground (no rubber) wires coming from it.
So I wired it up like so:
Which is to say, I took the microphone ground, and the ground to the 3.5mm jack, and tied them together and soldered them to the headset. Then I soldered the black wire from the jack to the headset, and the white wire from the microphone (you can't see it in the picture, but it and a ground come out of the black wire from the microphone boom in the top hole) to the red wire of the jack (and applied a little heat-shrink tubing to keep it all sealed).
Then, I cut off the part going around your head, leaving just the circular speaker and boom. I opened up the stitching on my helmet earpiece, and slipped in the device, creating a hole for the boom, and a hole (hidden by a strap) for the cord. Here is what the final result looks like:
I must say that it looks pretty clean, like I bought it instead of building it from broken pieces I had laying around.
Now, if I want to listen to music on my iPod or iPhone, I can simply plug either into my helmet. And, if I want to communicate with anyone on FRS radios or the iPhone, I can do that equally as well! I can't wait to get on the slopes to try it out!!!
